Question Can malware/viruses etc jump to a locked but plugged-in external drive?

So if plugging a dirty USB device into your computer can potentially infect the hard drives, can it reach a locked but plugged in external drive? Specifically, I keep my personal and sensitive documents on a couple Samsung T5/T7's that are always plugged into my computer which I try to keep...

News Nvidia teases RTX 40 Super series launch at CES — here's all of the leaked specs

My 4080 FE has about 1/4" clearance in my Fractal Meshify case, which is not exactly a tiny case.. lol. But honestly I love the beefy coolers. The thing runs about 65c tops. My 3080 FE ran about 78c with an undervolt, at much lower frame rates, and lower resolution, consuming more power. 4080 is...

Question T7 4Tb reading at normal speeds but writing to the drive at 2mbps??

The drive reads fine, I can copy files on it and paste them on the internal drive at normal speeds. Samsung magician scan found nothing wrong but trying to copy a 2Gb folder (or anything) writes at 2mbps. Tried different cables, ports, a restart. Copying onto my T5 2Tb writes that same 2Gb...

Question Mother got hooked by scammer but got away. Chromebook security questions.

I'm unfamiliar with Chrome OS and it's security, I had my Mom call me saying she was worried about hackers and thinks she got scammed, this is her story, "dun-dunn": - googled how to talk to a real person from comcast, and found the following number: 1-888-927-0775 (I googled this number itself...

News Intel's Upcoming Core i7-14700KF Nearly Hits 6 GHz in New Benchmark

But at what temps/power draw is the real question? As a consumer it's not that impressive if it draws 300w and needs to be built into the side of a glacier to maintain a functional temp. Like thanks Intel but I'll just wait the extra 30 seconds for my render to finish...

News Valve's SteamOS 3.5 Previews VRR and HDR for Steam Deck

I use VRR religiously on my desktop system (screen tearing is my bane, latency be damned) but after over a year of owning a steam deck, and hundreds of hours logged on it, I have never seen a screen tear or felt the need for VRR. If you use it with an external display it might be a different...

News First 'Starfield' Patch Lands as Bethesda Confirms Incoming DLSS Support

News I’m Sticking With Windows 10, but Microsoft Won’t Stop Nagging Me to Upgrade

"I also can’t find a single, must-have feature in Windows 11 that I don’t have in Windows 10." Tabs in Explorer vs multiple windows in 10. That's a godsend. But oh my life the right click menu in 11 is asinine.

Question Flickering black boxes on Cyberpunk

Gonna give you the green as it sadly was a hardware issue and a replacement fixed the issue. I saw a variety of bizarre graphical errors mostly with RT on that it eventually became apparent it was the card itself.

Question Black Void bug in RDR2 - is it GPU or game related??

I was successful in eliminating the issue by switching VUlkan to off. However I saw other bugs while using RT and the card was indeed defective. I exchanged it and the new one shows none of the issues the past one had.

Question App to force games to run at particular sizes on screen?

Is there an app that allows you to select a certain amount of the monitor that a game will then recognize as the new border? I have a massive screen and for some games I'd like them to only use like 70% of the screen. So something like when you open a game in a lower res in windowed mode but...

I am just wondering if cheap android tablets from Amazon could be a security risk? Help with creating a Win 10 dual boot

You mean: Power down PC>Switch off PSU>Hold PC power button for 30+ seconds>unplug PSU> then I'd be ok just slotting out the GPU with the 12 pin attached still?

Help with creating a Win 10 dual boot

-Definitely using 2 different drives -Do I really need to unplug the GPU in order to disconnect it from the motherboard or can I just slot it out safely? Help with creating a Win 10 dual boot

I have Win11 on my main M.2 drive and want to install Win10 on another Sata drive. So I downloaded the Win10 media creation tool, installed it on a thumb drive and now best I can tell I just rearrange the boot menu in BIOS and install win10 on that SATA drive like normal. What I am wondering...

Question Black Void bug in RDR2 - is it GPU or game related??

    - Yes to the DDU update - I want to believe its just the game and Vulkan but I wonder why there aren't many more reports for this issue then. Question Black Void bug in RDR2 - is it GPU or game related??

System is a fresh build from last month. Updated to latest BIOS and the GPU driver is just shy of the absolute latest. I guess I can try the latest. Question Flickering black boxes on Cyberpunk

Question AV scans 4 files on formatted SSD?

Interesting. The SSD had "My Documents" and "Pictures" from my last computer, so I assume they are Windows system files? The initial scan stopped on a password protected file call D:\$RECYCLEBIN..etc and asked for a password to scan it. It wouldn't accept my old Windows login so I don't know...

I am copying over folders to a new backup drive and it keeps changing the date "created" and "modified" to todays date. For files and folders it changes the "modified" to todays date but SOMETIMES leaves the "date created" as it should be. Annoyingly it isn't even consistent. I copied my mp3...

Question 7800x3D returned. Which option would you choose: 13700k, 13600k or 5800x3D?

Imho, NEVER, go with an F CPU. If for some reason your GPU fails or needs an RMA, the 30 dollars or whatever currency is going to seem like chump change compared to being completely unable to use your system for that time. You are already spending ~3000.. just go for the extra 30 and call it...
