Windows 10 is great but it is a little pushy with its ads sometimes. Whether trying to encourage you to buy Office or Candy Crush Saga, it isn’t shy about upselling. I think a little marketing is fair enough if you got Windows 10 as a free upgrade, but if you bought a license, it isn’t. Either way, here is how to get rid of annoying notification spam and ads in Windows 10.
Get rid of the ads in Windows 10
There are a few instances of advertising within Windows 10, I shall show you how to get rid of most of them.
1. Click the Windows Start button and select Settings.
2. Navigate to Personalization and Lock Screen.
3. Turn off ‘Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen’.
4. Navigate to Start within Personalization.
5. Turn off ‘Occasionally show suggestions in Start’.
6. Navigate to System within the Settings menu.
7. Scroll to ‘Get notifications from these senders’ and disable the Get Office app.
8. Navigate to Privacy while in Settings.
9. Disable ‘Let apps use my advertising ID…’.
Step 9 is optional. Windows 10 will advertise to you regardless of whether you allow it to use your ID or not. The decision is whether you would like ads for things you might actually like or for random products and services.
Finally:
1. Click the Windows Start button.
2. Right click an application ad and select ‘Turn off all suggestions’.
There are a few third-party apps that do a much more thorough job of disabling the advertising and reporting functions of Windows 10. If you followed this guide and liked your new desktop experience, you might like to check them out.
