How To Fix A Black Screen After Booting Windows 8

When Windows 8 is installed for the first time on a bare-metal machine (on a new hard disk in which no operating system is installed), the installation mostly completes successfully with no flaws or errors. Moreover, when administrators install appropriate drivers according to the hardware, the drivers are installed, and most of the times Windows 8 starts performing quite normally, as it is meant to be.

However, the problem may occur when administrators upgrade the device drivers, update Windows 8, or any driver fails to install properly. In such situations, a very common issue that users experience is that Windows 8 displays a black screen right after booting. When this happens, users are bound to restart the computer several times in vain to get the system up and running.

Since the above discussed issues arise because of driver or Windows updates or wrong driver installation, administrators must uninstall Windows updates, rollback the updated drivers, or uninstall the culprit drivers to resolve the issue.

How to Fix Black Screen after Booting Windows 8?

Since Windows 8 does not allow administrators to enter into safe mode by pressing F8 or Shift + F8 keys, it has to be enabled in Windows 8 by executing the BCDEDIT /SET {DEFAULT} BOOTMENUPOLICY LEGACY command in the command window while restarting the system using Windows 8 bootable media.
Once the command has been executed successfully, administrators can enter into safe mode by pressing F8 key, and can troubleshoot the following tasks.

Uninstalling the Updates

■Restart Windows 8 computer and insert Windows 8 bootable media into optical media drive (CD/DVD Drive).
■On the displayed Windows Setup box, click Next.
■On the next page, click Repair your computer.
■On Choose an option screen, click Troubleshoot.
■On Troubleshoot screen, click Advanced options.
■On Advanced options screen, click Command Prompt.
■On the opened Command Prompt window type C: and hit Enter.
■On C: prompt, type BCDEDIT /SET {DEFAULT} BOOTMENUPOLICY LEGACY command, and press Enter.
■Click Exit command to close the Command Prompt window.
■Back on the Choose an option screen, click Continue to restart Windows 8 computer.
■As the system restarts, press F8 key continuously to display the Advanced Boot Options screen.
■On the Advanced Boot Options screen, make sure that Safe Mode is selected and press Enter.
■Log on to Windows 8 computer with the administrator account.
■Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop screen.
■Once on the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
■From the displayed options, click Settings.
■On the Settings pane, click Control Panel.
■On the opened All Control Panel Items window, click Programs and Features.
■On Programs and Features window, click View installed updates from the left pane.
■On Installed Updates window, right click the recently installed update.
■From the displayed option, click Uninstall to remove the selected update.

Rolling Back the Updated Drivers

■Restart the Windows 8 computer and press F8 key continuously to display the Advanced Boot Options screen.
■On the Advanced Boot Options screen, make sure that Safe Mode is selected, and press Enter.
■Log on to Windows 8 computer with the administrator account.
■Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop screen.
■Once on the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
■From the displayed options, click Settings.
■On the Settings pane, click Control Panel.
■On the opened All Control Panel Items window, click Device Manager.
■On Device Manager window, double-click to expand the device category, driver of which is updated recently.
■From the expanded list, right click the updated driver.
■From the displayed context menu, click Properties.
■From the displayed Properties box, go to Driver tab.
■On selected tab, click Roll Back Driver button to roll back to the previously installed driver.

Note: Roll Back Driver button only becomes available if the device driver is updated.

Uninstalling the Culprit Drivers

■Restart the Windows 8 computer and press F8 key continuously to display the Advanced Boot Options screen.
■On the Advanced Boot Options screen, make sure that Safe Mode is selected, and press Enter.
■Log on to Windows 8 computer with the administrator account.
■Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop screen.
■Once on the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
■From the displayed options, click Settings.
■On the Settings pane, click Control Panel.
■On the opened All Control Panel Items window, click Device Manager.
■On Device Manager window, double-click to expand the device category, driver of which is to be uninstalled.
■From the expanded list, right click the driver that is to be removed.
■From the displayed context menu, click Uninstall.
■On the Confirmed Device Uninstall box, click OK to uninstall the selected device driver.
■Close the Device Manager window when done.
