How to fix corrupted files on Windows 10 bootable media

In-place upgrades are all very well, but sometimes only a clean installation will do. That’s where the Microsoft media creation tool comes in. It downloads all the necessary files and creates installation media for it to work its magic. It isn’t without its faults though with file corruption being prime among them. If you need to fix corrupted files on Windows 10 bootable media, here is what to do.

If Windows 10 has been running a while or you have been installing and uninstalling apps and games a lot, your registry is going to be a bit of a mess. This is where a clean install comes into its own. If creating that installation media is giving you problems, you will need to start over.

Fix corrupted files on Windows 10 bootable media
First let’s do some housekeeping and then create new bootable media.

1. Navigate to ‘C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download’.
2. Delete all of the contents in the folder. You may need to boot into Safe Mode for this, you may not.
3. Reboot your computer.
4. Navigate to the Microsoft media creation tool website and download it.
5. Select the version of Windows you currently have installed, 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
6. Choose to create ‘installation media for another PC’ and select the other options as appropriate.
7. Burn to a DVD or save to USB.
8. Set your computer to boot from the media and install.

You may already have a copy of the Windows 10 installation media but if you download a new copy, it will have the Anniversary Update within it already, saving you having to perform even more steps to bring your computer up to date.
