How to Fix Missing Metro Apps and Tiles in Windows 8?

When a Windows 8 computer is upgraded to Windows 8 RTM from its Developers Preview or Release Preview versions, you may encounter some strange issues such as missing Metro apps and tiles from the Start screen.

This issue may occur due to some improperly installed system files while upgrading the system from earlier released beta versions of Windows 8 operating system. Sometimes upgrading Windows 8 from any earlier released Windows operating systems such as Windows XP or Windows 7 can also corrupt certain system files.

This can make some pre-installed apps such as Games, News, Mail, etc. to disappear from the Start screen.

This issue can be fixed by following any one of the three methods discussed in this article.

How to Scan Windows 8

To scan Windows 8, step-by-step instructions are given below:

    ■Log on to Windows 8 computer with the administrator account.
    ■Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go the desktop window.
    ■Once on the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
    ■From the displayed options, click Search.
    ■On the opened Search pane in the right, make sure that Apps category is selected.
    ■On the same pane, type CMD in Apps field.
    ■From the displayed results on Apps window, right-click Command Prompt.
    ■From the displayed advanced options at the bottom of the window, click Run as administrator.
    ■On the User Account Control confirmation box, click Yes to provide the administrative consents to open the command prompt window.
    ■On command prompt window, type SFC /SCANNOW command and press Enter to initiate the scanning process.

    ■Close the command prompt window when done.


How to Restore a Windows 8 Computer

To restore a Windows 8 computer to an earlier restore point, here are the step-by-step instructions:

    ■Log on to Windows 8 computer with the administrator account.
    ■Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop screen.
    ■Once on the desktop screen, click File Explorer icon from the taskbar.
    ■On the opened Libraries window, right-click Computer from the left pane.
    ■From the context menu that appears, click Properties.
    ■On System window, from the left pane, click System protection.
    ■On the System Properties box, make sure that System Protection tab is selected.
    ■On the selected tab, click System Restore button under System Restore section.
    ■On the displayed System Restore box, make sure that the Recommended restore radio button in selected. Alternatively Choose a different restore point radio button can also be selected to manually choose the restore point to which Windows 8 is to be restored.
    ■Click Next to continue.
    ■On the Confirm your restore point page, click Finish.
    ■On the displayed confirmation box, click Yes to restore the Windows 8 computer to an earlier restore point.


How to Refresh a Windows 8 Computer

To refresh a Windows 8 computer:

    ■Log on to Windows 8 computer with the administrator account.
    ■Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go the desktop window.
    ■Once on the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
    ■From the displayed options, click Settings.
    ■From the bottom of the Settings pane, click Change PC settings.
    ■From the left section of the displayed PC settings window, click to select General.

    ■From the right section, click Get started under Refresh your PC without affecting your files section.
    ■On Refresh your PC screen, click Next.
    ■Follow on-screen instructions thereafter to continue with the refresh process.
