There are a few reasons why you might see a black screen in Windows. While they are all inconvenient, they are all quite fixable. If you need to fix the Windows 10 Black Screen issue, here’s how you do it.

The black screen usually appears during or just after a Windows 10 install or upgrade as the computer boots into the desktop. It manifests as a completely black screen that doesn’t respond to input. The cause can be as simple as having the wrong display as default or not being able to access the login screen.

Fix the Windows 10 Black Screen issue
If you see a black screen just after your upgrade or installation of Windows 10, try these.

1. Press Ctrl on your keyboard. You may not see anything happening but if the computer is stuck at the login screen, Ctrl puts the cursor into the password box.
2. Type in your password and hit Enter.
3. Windows should now load into the desktop as normal.
4. If it doesn’t, press Enter, retype the password and press Enter again.

If that doesn’t work, try this:

1. If you use multiple monitors, make sure you have the correct one connected. If your motherboard has onboard graphics but you use a graphic card, make sure the onboard graphics are disabled in your BIOS.
2. Also make sure the monitor cable is connected to the correct port and fitted tight.

Or this:

1. Boot into Safe Mode using the Windows installation media.
2. Manually install the correct graphics and audio drivers for your hardware.
3. Reboot.

Finally, try this:

1. Boot into Safe Mode using the Windows installation media.
2. Navigate to Control Panel, System and Security, Power Options.
3. Click the ‘Change plan settings’ text link, ‘Change advanced power settings’ and then ‘Change Settings That are Currently Unavailable’.
4. Find ‘Fast Startup’ and disable it. You may not see it depending on how you set up your computer.
