Windows Store is an integral part of Windows 10 but it has its foibles and can be annoying at times. For example, many Windows Store apps and updates will only work with Windows Firewall enabled. Most enlightened Windows users will have a more competent third party firewall. Fortunately, there is a way to install Windows 10 apps without the Windows Store. Here’s how.

Called sideloading, the process of installing apps through means other than the official store can be used across devices and across operating systems. Windows 10 is one of them.

1. Click the Windows Start button and select Settings.
2. Navigate to Update & security and For developers.
3. Click the button next to ‘Sideload apps’.
4. Click Yes to agree to sideloading.

Once you have rebooted, you can install applications regardless of whether they are in Windows Store or are officially approved by Microsoft. There is obviously a risk involved in this as Microsoft may not have tested the combability or security of said app. The entire premise of Universal Windows Platform apps is to make sure your experience is a seamless one. If you’re comfortable with that and are confident that the app is safe, you can now install what you like!
