The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is a big update that makes changes of varying degrees to just about every aspect of Windows. It isn’t something to do lightly, not if you want it to run smoothly anyway. Prepare for Windows 10 Anniversary Update
While it is entirely possible to leave Windows to take care of the update automatically, this is Microsoft we’re talking about. The more you can grease the wheels and protect your data before letting it loose on your computer, the better the process should be.
This is what you should do before any big update:
Backup your data – Save all your critical data to an external drive before performing the upgrade. Then perform a system image of your system as a secondary backup.
Update all drivers – Make sure your graphics, audio, motherboard and peripheral drivers are all on their latest versions. If you are performing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update now, most manufacturers will have drivers ready.
Remove all peripherals – Remove printers, gamepads, cameras and any non-essential peripheral you have connected to your computer. The less you have connected, the smoother the upgrade will go. It also makes troubleshooting easier if anything goes wrong.
Turn off security software – Just before performing the update, disable Windows Defender. Also disable any third-party security software as they really don’t like anything that changes core files.
If you do what you can to make the update easier, it should be a breeze. All you need do now is hit Update and sit back and relax.
