System restore is a useful aspect of Windows and can save a lot of time and energy when troubleshooting. If you want to learn how to turn on or off System Protection and manually create restore points in Windows 10, this tutorial is for you.
System Protection is a form of backup built into Windows 10. It takes copies of system files and settings in case something happens to the live versions. It also saves previous versions, allowing you to restore the system to a known working configuration should you need to.
While I do show you how to turn it off, I would always advise leaving System Protection on for your OS drive.
Turn on System Protection in Windows 10
1. Type or paste ‘Control panel’ into the Search Windows box.
2. Navigate to System and Security, System.
3. Select System protection on the left.
4. On the System Protection tab, ensure Protection is set to On for your C: drive.
5. Click configure if it isn’t to set it up and select ‘Turn on system protection’. Allocate disk space as required and click Ok.
Turn off System Protection in Windows 10
Turning off System Protection in Windows 10 is the same as above except you check that Protection is set to Off for your drives. Confirm once prompted and that’s all there is to it.
Manually create a restore point in Windows 10
Restore points are created on a schedule within Windows but you can prompt a manual operation. Here’s how.
1. Type or paste ‘Control panel’ into the Search Windows box.
2. Navigate to System and Security, then System.
3. Select System protection on the left.
4. Click Create at the bottom of the new window.
5. Enter a description and click Create.
The process should show a progress window as it proceeds. Just click close once complete.
