Only the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) can be installed on Windows 8/8.1. If you were still using Windows 7, an earlier compatible JRE version would have worked for you. But the case is different with Windows 8/Windows 8.1.

In order to install Java Runtime Environment, you need to download the most recent version from the official website. Make sure you know whether you're running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the OS.

Follow the steps below to download and install the latest and compatible version of Java Runtime Environment on your copy of Windows 8/Windows 8.1:

■Log on to Windows 8/ Windows 8.1 using the administrator account.
■Once logged on, from the Start screen, click the button with the down arrow to open the Apps screen.

■From the Apps window, open your favorite browser (eg. Mozilla Firefox, Google chrome)

■On the browser’s address bar, type http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and press Enter.

■When prompted, click Save File and specify the location where you want the file to be downloaded.

■Download the appropriate Java Runtime Environment installation file as per the compatibility of your operating system.
■Once the file is downloaded, double-click the file, and follow on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
