There are a lot of in game help tips that will explain how combat and other things in the game itself work, but there really are a lot of them, and it can be quite easy to miss a few when trying to skip through the dozen or so that pop up at a time whenever you do something new. So here's a quick guide on some of the basics that you absolutely need to know when playing Tyranny.
Step 1)Engagement.
This mechanic reminds me a bit of attacks of opportunity from Dungeons and Dragons, but it does work a bit differently. Everyone can by default engage one other target. This happens automatically when two targets close to melee range of each other and one of them attacks the other. Once they are engaged then they will stay that way until one of them dies, or moves away. The thing to watch for here though is that if they move away they will prompt several attacks against themselves which can be quite deadly. As you progress in the game you'll find you can actually engage multiple enemies at a time if you spend your ability points in the right abilities. This can make your tankier characters able to force multiple enemies to engage them at once or risk getting smacked around when they try to disengage.
Step 2)Read everything.
Honestly, there is a lot of reading involved in this game, and this tip really goes for more than just combat. In this case though, read all of your characters abilities, learn what they do, and organize them on your hot bar in a way that makes sense to you so that you can easily access them and use the abilities you want at any time.
Step 3)Pause often.
The in game menu, when explored, will actually allow you to set up a few conditions that will automatically pause the game. This can be very helpful if you set it up to pause whenever combat is started, that way you will always be able to take your time and check out what the enemy is about to throw at you, and then you can set everything up before you unpause the game to counter that.
Step 4)Issue multiple commands.
During combat, you can issue multiple commands to your companions by holding shift. This way you can pause the game, plan out the entire battle if you wanted, and then unpause and watch it unfold. This can eliminate a lot of the micro managing of your multiple companions.
Step 5)Set up your companions AI system.
Just in case you don't want to micro manage your companions, or just in case at any point they need to be able to watch out for themselves, it's best to set up their AIs according to how you want them to act in a fight. This can be set up by clicking on the head with a gear just to the left and up from the companions portrait when you have them selected.
Hopefully, with these tips, you'll be able to take on anything that Tyranny can throw at you. And if not.. Well, save often and keep trying Fatebinder!
