I hardly touched my PI, I set up a basic Samba and HTTP apache server on it with ArchARM that I could access outside home with dynamic DNS, SSH and VNC.

Doesn't sound like it was formatted correctly. Rufus usually works for me on Windows machine but I prefer to use https://github.com/slacka/WoeUSB on Linux. Works every time.
