I have no idea how or why, but I turned my computer on today and the power/search buttons have appeared on start along with all the other desktop settings. Maybe the NSA saw my post and decided to help me out. In any case thanks for the replies.

Yes it does, I'm configured to boot to desktop. I have a windows 8.1 laptop that I've had for almost a year set up the same way, and I don't have this problem on it.

My room is in the basement, so I don't think it's going to get any colder than that. I tried booting with only 1 stick of ram as well as resetting the battery. I checked all the power cables visually and with a multimeter, and I reseated the CPU with new thermal paste.

My OS is windows 7, by the way, if that changes anything.
