Question Any way to update drivers on an offline / non-system disk?

I see. The information on that disk isn't mere data, it's magical. Some sorcerer has placed a spell on that disk that prevents replacing one driver file with another. I'll figure it out for myself. I expected better from this hotbed of "geniuses", but it's a lesson learned: Don't come back here.

Question Any way to update drivers on an offline / non-system disk?

I can't boot my 64-bit Windows 7 laptop even in safe mode, but I'd rather chew broken glass than reinstall from scratch. System restores don't work either. So what I'm looking for is some way to update or re-install the driver(s) which are preventing me from booting. I would connect the...

Question ASUS Desktop powers on, then off, then on again, then Boot_Device_LED lit

Thank you once more! The situation has gotten as bad as it can get. I received the cable I needed and performed a partial install of the spare Corsair 850 as planned. By "partial" I mean that I only connected the 24-pin ATX power connector and the 8-pin CPU power connector and nothing else. And...

Question ASUS Desktop powers on, then off, then on again, then Boot_Device_LED lit

Well, the PSU that was in there is a Thermaltake ToughPower 750W Gold. The unused one is a Corsair 850W Gold. Unfortunately, while the main 24-pin modular cable was present, I apparently misplaced the 8-pin CPU power cable (I've heard that's kinda important ;)) I discovered that Amazon has a...

Question ASUS Desktop powers on, then off, then on again, then Boot_Device_LED lit

Oh, and about the PSU, I need to remove it to determine which one is in there (I have four other machines, so I'm unsure). And since I need to do that, I may as well try a different PSU while I'm in there. Fortunately, I have an unused one so I don't have to deal with the long, nasty job of...

Question ASUS Desktop powers on, then off, then on again, then Boot_Device_LED lit

Thank you ENORMOUSLY for your response! I was worried my OP was too long. Your hunch that I hadn't removed the battery as part of clearing the CMOS was correct. So I removed it, moved the pin jumper, and left the battery out for a good long while (with the machine unplugged, of course). When I...

Question ASUS Desktop powers on, then off, then on again, then Boot_Device_LED lit

My ASUS Z87-A based system has a weird problem: When I turn it on, it powers up for a couple of seconds, turns itself off, then it comes on again and stays on. Shortly after turning itself on, the red BOOT_DEVICE_LED is lit and stays lit. But it never enters POST, or at least no monitor shows a...

PCIe x2 twice as fast as x1?

That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't certain. Thanks very much!

PCIe x2 twice as fast as x1?

Hey, thanks for your reply! I was puzzled by the reference to x2 as well, but here's a link to the product on Amazon (I'm actually considering a used one): IO Crest 8-port SATA III PCIe 2.0 x2 Controller Card. The x2 is right there in the product's name, although I realize there are no x2 PCIe...

PCIe x2 twice as fast as x1?

I'm in the market for an 8-port PCIe SATA III adapter card, which I'll use in JBOD mode rather than RAID. I only wanted 6 ports, but I couldn't find such. I found one card that requires an x1 slot and another that requires x2 (or more, of course). I can use either card in my current system...

Just replaced mobo, now turns off immediately. Now what?

Right again, oh knowledgeable panathas! It was night when I looked before my last posting, but with the sun up I finally saw the printed label (I feel rather dumb!). It was the Boot Device LED, which I've straightened out, but only to a limited extent. Before continuing with my almost...

Just replaced mobo, now turns off immediately. Now what?

Hi again, panathas! Well, on your wise suggestion, I took my i7-4790K CPU to be tested, and they found that it had definitely failed. They said they'd seen about 10 4'th generation Haswell CPUs fail, usually not long after the warranty expired (just like mine). They said something about how Gen...

Just replaced mobo, now turns off immediately. Now what?

OK, since I've now bought two expensive items that were almost certainly completely unnecessary, I just can't impulsively think of buying yet a third, extremely expensive item! So I beg you, is there anything else I can try first that makes sense? I'm losin it...

Just replaced mobo, now turns off immediately. Now what?

Well, that didn't help. I didn't actually remove the mobo & PSU; instead I just unplugged all the Systems Panel connections (power, LEDs, etc) and a separate Silverstone digital info display (which sat between things like the CPU fan and chassis fans and temperature probes, etc). Then I shorted...
