Oh Dear . the drive can be fried. I mean, I had similiar problem with HDD which didnt start at all or freezed whole system at POST message. Have you tried to plug that HDD to other computer? Not as Boot Drive but as Second Drive?

Windows Firewall is enough to protect you. If you are paranoid try ZoneAlarm Free Firewall (Freeware) its for free. I believe that you are good to go with Windows Firewall. Get a good antivirus, good one I can recommend is BitDefender or Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials. Good luck

If you dont have original disc I believe you can download form torrent exact version of your windows and make bootable disc or bootable usb. Check if your laptop has sticker with CD KEY somewhere
