News Fortnite cheater fined $175,000 for using cheats to win $6,850 in competitive tournaments — Epic bans player forever

Absolutely dystopian. It always disturbs me when people cheer these sorts of rulings because they're stapled to the "cheater" label. The landmark Game Genie lawsuit back in 1992 found runtime code modification to be legal and fair use. But fast forward to today, and it has become commonplace...

News Windows 11 Insiders surprised by return of Vista startup sound — it’s a bug not a feature, says MS exec

This was obviously intentional, given the perfect timing with Apple's "liquid glass" UI update.

News Asus launches new ROG Wi-Fi 7 gaming router that comes with nine 2.5G ports

The gaming port is an SoC-level feature that mostly acts as QoS on a hardware level.

News Nvidia RTX 5060 Ti 8GB struggles due to lack of VRAM — and not just at 4K ultra

There's no reason for a Ti card to have 8GB of VRAM when the RTX 3060 from two generations back had 12GB.

News Newegg reintroduces scalper-beating 'Shuffle' lottery for premium-priced RTX 5080s

I wouldn't give Newegg that sort of credit here. I still have an RTX 3060 I bought from their previous Shuffle era, and it wasn't close to a deal. Newegg used the Shuffle to sell "bundles," where you were forced to buy an under-performing item with the graphics card, rather than the card alone...

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x Snapdragon X Elite drops to $799 — get yourself a shiny new laptop for the holidays

Glancing at Best Buy's inventory, it looks like there are discounts on nearly half of their Copilot+ laptops of all varieties. The Intel-powered Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i is $300 off, the AMD-powered HP OmniBook Ultra is $600 off, and so on. I wonder if this means the Copilot+ label isn't selling...

News x86 reigns supreme as Snapdragon X Elite chips captured just 0.8% of the market with 720,000 units sold in Q3 2024 — Qualcomm misses out on rising...

I have a Snapdragon X laptop and I think they're unfairly overlooked by some, although I do acknowledge they're still a niche product. I've been really happy with mine thus far (Yoga Slim 7x), with the most noticeable difference being that it runs cooler than any other laptop I've had. The...

News Buggy Windows Update starts automatically 'upgrading' Windows 2022 servers to Windows Server 2025

This only happened automatically because of Heimdal. Windows Server 2025 appears as an optional upgrade you need to manually select from Windows Update otherwise. KB5044284 isn't pushed as a required update and will not install on its own under vanilla Server 2022.

Review MacBook Pro (14-inch, M4) review: Nano-texture niceness

Easy compatibility and a familiar interface. I have a Windows Arm laptop and have been pretty happy with the balance it strikes. For example, my browser and media player are Arm builds, so they run efficiently and I get great battery life. But I can also fire up a 25 year old video game or use...

News Researchers discover battery-free technology which harvests power from radio and Wi-Fi signals for low-powered devices

This is not even remotely new. It's also wildly impractical; either the amount of power harvested is vanishingly small, or enough power is collected that you create an RF deadzone behind the gathering device. The former is useless compared to a battery, and the latter will have the FCC after you.

News Microsoft Copilot+ PCs available now — here are all the Snapdragon Elite X laptops you can buy today

Emulation and battery life are the only metrics I'm interested in, with emulation being the most critical unknown by a significant margin. Does the translation layer actually work seamlessly for the occasional legacy software I need to run? And is real-world battery life significantly better...

RTX 4060 vs RTX 3060 12GB GPU faceoff: New versus old mainstream GPUs compared

There's one test I would have liked to see that isn't here, and that's transcode performance. I'm fairly sure that's the one place the 3060's VRAM advantage actually does make the card come out ahead.

Review Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) review: Portability over power

I have an older RTX 3060 G14 model, and although this one has some nice improvements, it appears to just miss the mark. I use mine primarily as a productivity and media device. It's usually run on battery, in silent fanless mode, with the discrete graphics turned off. Of particular value to me...

News Anycubic 3D printers hacked in bold attempt to inform owners of security hole

Anycubic is in the header image of that article, which lists both the Anycubic Photon Mono 2 and Anycubic Photon Mono M5s as some of the best printers.
