Ok. I can see the device in boot menu, disk manager and windows explorer. but cannot see it in Samsung magician. may the drive be faulty? I cannot seem to find anywhere to update the firmware for this particular drive

Yep. The ssd is listed as drive 1 partition 1. Deleted it, formatted it. Still the same error message. Listed as only 464GB though. But I'm assuming that's normal.

Installing a fresh windows 8.1 onto the drive. No other hdd's or storage plugged in. But fails on custom windows setup -> where do you want to install windows. Windows cannot be installed to the disk (error message in original post) and no amount of fiddling around in the bios seems to change...

Neither can I. New sata cable and same power line as my optical drive, plugged into a 6gbs Intel data port (a gray one specifically). Sata mode on bios is AHCI. No change when I flipped it over to IDE.

It's a 2.5" drive.
