Sorry if I sound stupid but what is a network card?

I have finally built my first gaming and everything has been running smoothly until the very last stage.. i cant connect to wifi. i have installed all drivers and my computer wont even recognize that there is wifi, i thought it might be the BT hub but i tried an ethernet cord and it works fine...
