Check all of the settings in the sound properties, such as volume level and whatnot. Also make sure any programs you use, that also use the mic, have their settings turned up as well.

Have you checked to make sure nothing else is running that could be taking CPU cycles away from the games? I would make sure there are also no services running that might cause problems since they can be running and it's pretty easy to miss it unless you make a habit of checking the running...

If you wanted to save some money you could drop it down to 4gb and go with a 7850, but really that's only something I would do if I really didn't want to spend the extra cash.
