    Intermittent Freezing - Please Help

Just updating here. Turns out the SSD was failing. Resource monitor was showing 100% Highest Active Time throughout freezings. Usually on HDDs, the BIOS will attempt CheckDisk on every startup, so it's easier to recognize. Not the case with SSDs. I finally clued in when my fiancee's...

    Intermittent Freezing - Please Help

Apparently the problem reappeared last night even without the optical drive connected... I think I'm going to throw up my arms in capitulation and do a clean Win 7 install. It's really the only thing left that could be causing an issue: the fact that this was installed with drivers for a...

    Intermittent Freezing - Please Help

Well, those didn't help, but a fit of pure frustration did. I started taking out components piece by piece, rebooting each time, quite literally yelling "what's wrong with you?!" Once the DVD burner was no longer connected via SATA, problem stopped. Headed back over tonight to see if a new...

    Intermittent Freezing - Please Help

I recently gave the majority of my old system's guts to my brother, as I've upgraded. However, his "new" system is now locking up for 5-15 seconds at a time, roughly every 2 or 3 minutes. Nearly everything aside from the PSU & optical drive (brand new) and the SSD & HDD (he had those already)...

Then that's the cause of your problem. You don't need to buy new RAM. Just buy a 64-bit copy of Windows, and you'll see the rest of your RAM. All your applications will thank you.

I have both that board and that RAM. They work just fine together. I think your issue may be a 32-bit copy of Windows. Please double check that and let us know. (32-bit only supports up to 3GB of RAM)

    High RAM usage when idle

That is not a high amount of mem usage. Skype and Steam will always take about that much memory, and Firefox will use more depending on how many tabs you have open, and what their content is.

    ASRock 990FX Extreme9 AM3+ AMD 990FX or Asus Crosshair V Formula - Z

Can't speak for those boards specifically, but I have a Sabertooth and I can comfortably say that ASUS products are crazy reliable. Mine survived two PSUs burning out. (awful wiring in my old apartment. Finally learned and got a nice sturdy brick to plug everything into.)
