Thank you! I've relayed all this info to him. He's going to see if he still gets and BSDs without the WiFi adapter plugged in and if he doesn't, then he'll buy a new card like you've suggested. Thanks so much! Will update if he does get another crash without the adapter in use.

I was thinking about this too. I don't think they have an extra one (all the other computers in the house are macbooks) and his pc is in his room, but I'll see if he can move it out to wherever their router is and use Ethernet to see if the issue resolves. Thanks for checking for the driver!
