    Thanks - I took the plunge and signed in with the new account, which was enough to allow me to run System Restore to go back to an earlier restore point, and all is now well.

    I've done a really stupid thing and badly messed up my PC. I used netplwiz to change my user name to something closer to my real name, but as soon as I did that, I can't start any programs because I get the message above. Mine was the only account on the machine (it's also my Microsoft acct)...

    Thanks for providing some explanation of what's going on However, I've looked at the text very closely and I can see no unmatched parens within the box. If there are any, they must be deeper into the document. Is there a way to switch off this unhelpful facility?
