News Russia prepares 128-core server platform for supercomputers: Report

Given the low number of chips involved, does it really matter what tech is used to manufacture it? Getting fewer chips per wafer wouldn't affect the overall cost much, since R&D would remain the dominant factor.

News German court issues injunction against sales of select Intel CPUs

Between "before" and "after" is a whole world of difference. Invalidation of a patent is property deprivation. That can't happen without due process of law.

News German court issues injunction against sales of select Intel CPUs

A rejection of an application in the home country would automatically cancel pending applications in all other countries, I believe. Invalidation is different legally.

News Pat Gelsinger's initials are etched into every 386 processor ever made — Intel CEO literally made his mark as a key CPU designer

I remember putting a system like that together for my sister. When I turned it on for the first time black smoke started coming out from under the Cyrix coprocessor. No harm done though. Just had to rotate the chip 180 degrees.

News Cerebras Boss Calls Nvidia ‘Un-American’ for Sanctions-Swerving GPUs

What's un-American is flagrant violations of the US Constitution. These sanctions are clearly fall under the concept of "regulatory taking". Shareholders of Nvidia are being forced to take a financial hit in the name of some public good. That's not permissible according to the Fifth Amendment...

News 780 Intel CPUs Seized In $137,000 Smuggling Operation Bust

I grew up in Macau. I remember how people used to smuggle pieces of pork back into the city by strapping them to their body. The pay-off really doesn't have to be that high. Some people just like the feeling that they get from cheating the system. Like neighboring Hong Kong, Macau has no VAT...

News Hand 386 Delivers A "True 386 Processor" in a Handheld

Not sure how you can physically make a LED CGA screen. The pixels were rectangular. At the same time it has to support 720x350 Hercules monochrome mode. Would really like to see the 8088 machine running the original version of GeoWorks Emsemble. A multitasking OS with a full GUI and an office...

News 10,000 Chinese Chip Developers Closed Shop in 2021–2022

15% of firms failing over two years seems rather low, actually. I'm sure the figure is way higher in America. No government money to keep dud start-ups on life support.

News AMD Posts First Loss in Years as Consumer Chip Sales Plummet

Hardly surprising. AMD has always been stronger in Europe than in the US, in Germany in particular. Consumers on this side of the pond are just flat out broke. People are struggling to put food on the table.

News Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Requires a Staggering 155GB of Drive Space

Wouldn't surprise me if it was an idea from marketing to make the game the biggest ever.

News Google Bard Plagiarized Our Article, Then Apologized When Caught

Plagiarism is irrelevant. Citation is irrelevant. You will become one with the Bard. Resistance is futile.

News Raja Koduri Leaves Intel to Found Software Start-Up

I suspect the truth is probably not too far from the official version: guy just wanted to move on. Intel's GPU effort has moved into the stage where the company is trying to recoup its investment. It's a lot less fun than the initial stage, when the team gets to spend money like there's no tomorrow.

News These Blu-Ray Discs Are Guaranteed to Last 100 Years

You're an optimist, sir. I think a hundred years from now people will try to decrypt the files with a sports drink. "Brawndo, it's got what discs crave!"

News These Blu-Ray Discs Are Guaranteed to Last 100 Years

No it won’t. Quantum computing is a threat to public key cryptography. Symmetric ciphers like AES aren’t vulnerable.
