Why is software 7-8 years behind CPU technology?!?!?!?!?

I make no claims of knowledge on how 64 bit CPUs execute 32 bit code but I think I have read before that at least a portion of the core goes unused. I believe it does have to do with the registers but I am not certain. I agree with your point that 64 bit has been marketed for a very long...

    Fastest CPU for engineering workstation

I could only find really old comparisons between Itainium 2 and the original (single core) Opteron http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,635775,00.asp and from http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=1935 Depending on how many CPUs your current system is running any modern...

Why is software 7-8 years behind CPU technology?!?!?!?!?

only addressing threading/multicore The quote above seems to be placing multiple core support on the OS when every current OS is capable of supporting as many cores as you can throw at it (yes M$ limits cores/CPUs based on the licesnse you purchased, XP home does not suport 2 sockets and XP...

What's needed to receive HDTV from Comcast?

For Comcast HD content (encrypted) I think the only way to get it to a pc is using the Firewire port on the back of the DVR. instructions can be found here: http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/index.html It links back to an AVS Forum topic on the subject. There are some catches though...

    Itanium 2, Xeon 5XXX or Opteron 2XX?

Since clustering is out and your biggest priority is FPU consider looking into an FPU accelerator on a 2P machine (Opteron 22xx or Xeon 51xx) Toms has featured sseveral articles recently on FPU acceleration either as a seperate card or a software solution the utilizes your GPU. Peakstream...

I just couldn't get diff Eq which is why I hate it so much. I have a friend who is now a math teacher who loves calc/diff Eq/statistics but she also scored way higher than me on the geek test.
