Phone detects 5 ghz channel but not 2.4 ghz

it would be better connecting to the 5ghz instead of the 2.4. Some devices, like wireless phones can interfere with 2.4ghz but not 5ghz.

Fastest way to move files from laptop to PC

that is a little tricky. New computer, new drivers, parts, etc etc. You can't simple copy/clone the hd. If you are only moving pictures, documents, ect, that is simple. Either by connecting hd in that computer as 2nd hd, or by using a router, with both computers connected to it.

    Deciding between CPUs

for gaming..... Intel I5 type. For 3d programs (cad) editing, compressing videos, etc, however, more like the xeon. You might want to look up benchmarks of the programs you are using to compare cpu power. See which one benefits you the most. Or if the time difference makes any difference.

Do I need a new CPU or a new GPU?

I would not waste money on expensive video cards unless you are running at 4k resolutions. Basically shoot for 60fps average in games. the cpu is the bottle neck of the system. Upgrading it will probably speed up the video card you have, a little bit.

    For general use

It depends. In the descriptions on newegg, for example, will show how many plugs the psu has. Some has more than others. But it's not really based on wattage, but the maker.

    Simple Upgrade To i7

Try doing some googling and looking up benchmarks for video compressing for cpus, see what gain you get. (it may not be much). If you are just watching videos and doing photo editing, you don't need a better cpu.
