Same issue here: drive on x520 failed like 6 months later. As it needed an upgrade I changed it out for a 500 then a 1TB, 3 drives later (and 5+ years) optical drive and RAM went.
Actually the ML folks are buying up a lot of them. An array of 12x 1080Ti's on the "mining" board Asus were selling a while back would smoke any custom setup, with 24 core CPU
