You can kill a CPU by a high static discharge. If you were rooting around in the case you probably touched metal and released any built up charge that could have hurt your CPU. Bad CPU or even bad MB come into play here but without any way to test anything you are just guessing.

The Vcc-d-grnd is probably your front USB ports. Default you BIOS and start again with one stick of memory. Make sure the aux power cpu plug is plugged in. If your video card needs an aux plug it should be plugged in too. It's a process of elimination.

Change "memtest on start-up" in BIOS to Qwikboot. If you have it on memtest it will go through the memory in all four sticks before continuing boot. This can take a while.

Remount the heatsink and CPU. You can clean the heatsink off with rubbing alcohol. Use Arctic Silver 5 or any other thermal paste. If the heatsink cannot be mounted tight to the CPU then get rid of it. You cannot have the heatsink moving around or not applying adequate pressure to the CPU. Also...

Well the thermal compound should be just a thin layer. The problem you describe can happen when one forgets to plug in the 4 or 8 pin CPU power plug in the socket by the CPU. After that, make sure the BIOS default jumper is on the right place and not shorting at the pins. After that?
