Found that I wasn't doing things in the order that the raid card bios wanted things done. Was able to get some tips from a server guru as to what to do first, second etc and then things were OK. Thanks for the ideas.

Hmmmmmmmm - - - that could work if I were running windows except I'm running Debian stable and that makes it a little difficult to use windows files to access the hardware.
