I agree with others that you should get a tool to take a look at the drives health. Most of the time this is a hardware issue with the drive itself. Find a tool that will let you pull the SMART values and see what you see. If SMART values are in the red then its time to RMA/replace the drive.

If you are going to go M.2 I would highly recommend you invest in a PCIE M.2 and not a SATA one. The performance is insanely better. Especially if you are Z170. I am doing a build now with the ITX version of your board and it will be getting a 950 PRO 512 :)
