I had to make the same decision recently. For me, 980ti all day long, i bought a rx480 sold it within a month, once you turn msaa on etc you have too many compromises to keep the frame rates high, as for freesync (my range 32-80hz), to me its proved useless because the rx480 dips below 50 fps...

I dont think you both quite understand where im coming from :) I know the higher the temperature the more degradation. And i know the higher the frequency the more voltage that is needed to keep it stable. Ill ask another theoretical question first. would 5ghz @1.3v 100% load be hotter...
