Upgrading to Windows 8.1 from 8 shouldn't affect your data. I have Windows 8.1 on my HTPC, and when I upgraded from 8, all I had to do was go to the Microsoft Store, download the 8.1 update, and reboot for it to finish installing. (Note that this is a free upgrade)
