The 970 SLI will stutter / lag / tear if you exceed 3.5 gb of vram. This also applies to the 970 SLI. Advise is to live with the 970 which should last 6 months before it is completely obsolete due to vram issues and wait for the next gen i.e. 980 ti or the amd 390x. Else wait for 14nm graphics...

The gtx 970 only has 3.5 gb of vram if you use anymore than that you will lag / tear / stutter. Advise is to buy either a single gtx 980 or titan x or if you do not mind amd then two 290x's crossfired or a 295x will destroy the titan x.

dont get the gtx 960 yet nvidia fibbed about the specs of the gtx 970 they said it has 4 gb vram it only has 3.5 gb vram and 0.5 gb crippled vram think its best wait to see whether the gtx 960 is actually 2gb vram and whether the bandwidth is actually what they say it is.
