I'm pretty sure it's impossible without the motherboard being operational as as you said the key is tied to the motherboard. Think it may be gone already. Will try the key I've got being used on this PC I'm typing from now. It's only activated on this one computer.

I mean windows was already installed on the old now broken laptop so the files will still be there. I don't have the key unfortunately but I do have a key for another version of windows 8.1 that might work as I think it allows 1 laptop 1 desktop. Okay the machine I have now is 8.1 64 bit and I plan to transfer that over to a laptop that was previously running windows 7 but has the hardware requirements to run W8.1. It's basically because it's a much bigger drive and I personally prefer it as an OS.

Okay it's come back to life again, not sure how well but everything appears to be running normally. I shook it several times with the cover removed and I think it dislodged a screw or something that was running along the back of the motherboard, preventing it shorting out on startup.
