Just got my second 970 and was having the same issue at first! What I did was go into Nvidia Control Panel and I made sure sli was enabled of course,then went into "configure SLI, Surround, PhysX"and under PhysX settings change the processor to CPU, then under "Manage 3D Settings" go to global...

In response to original post are you sure it was the ssc and not just sc? The ssc version is said to have an entirely new cooling design (ACX 2.0+) as opposed to just ACX 2.0 with sc...

Kinda sucks bc nzxt g10 compatibility only really means it'll attach to card, but doesn't ensure it'll cool ALL components effectively... has anyone ran the 970 with g10 and monitored vram temps?

If looking for a good case for water cooling, I must suggest the Corsair Carbide Air 540! It's the one I went with and it is awesome, plenty of room for radiators up top, in the front, rear and bottom! It's not shaped like a normal tower it's more of a cube shape but it makes for great airflow...
