    Powerline adapter buying help

In general, the higher the spec, the more throughput. And nothing comes even close to the spec. I'm running some older 300Mbps powerline adapters (which I got dirt cheap, some as little as $5 a piece) and I get about 45Mbps. And that's even mixing different vendors (which surprised even me)...

Trying to get Wake On LAN over the internet (WAN?) to work

I agree w/ bill001g in many respects. There is no spec for anything called WOW. That's just shorthand for triggering WOL via a port forward. And yes, it would actually be better to use the broadcast address (FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF) instead of the MAC address of each device you intend to wake over...

Trying to get Wake On LAN over the internet (WAN?) to work

P.S. I was thinking of another possible workaround. I haven't tried it personally (although I could if given time), but seems to me it would work provided you have and can set that BIOS option I spoke of earlier, where the system will automatically boot when power returns from a prior loss of...

    Disconnecting in-wall ethernet connection

This is the line that got my attention. Connected laptop & ethernet directly to R6700 and its fine That suggests the problem lies between the R6700 and the desktop and all that rather vague description about running ethernet along the ceiling and "panel" (?). Is it not possible to similarly...

    Amazon Fire TV VPN

Looked a little deeper into this, and afaict, it doesn't support a VPN, at least not natively. Users are installing the VPN as an add-on, probably from the Fire app store. Frankly, I find this to be the wrong approach. It means that at anytime Amazon could detect the VPN and either break it...

Trying to get Wake On LAN over the internet (WAN?) to work

In order for WOL to work, the ARP entry for the target device (which maps the target device's MAC address to its IP address) must be available, but it's only cached in the router for a very short period (5-10 mins in most cases). And since the device is sleeping, when you try to use that port...

2 separate networks with one provider?

If it helps, here's the firewall script I use for my own dd-wrt guest router. https://pastebin.com/1df1XsuK The reason *I* use this approach for my home network is I don't like keeping the guest network up unless we really have guests. But I don't want the spouse or kids messing around w/ the...

    Problem with port forwarding

At the moment, let's not concern ourselves with what these port checking sites report. They could be wrong, and ultimately all that counts is what actually happens when you attempt the connection yourself. Given your last post, I assume you have an OpenVPN server located elsewhere on the LAN...

    Problem with port forwarding

Well that's a good start, since these must match in order for port forwarding to work at all. As far as the VPN, port 1194 is the well-known port for OpenVPN. Is the OpenVPN server running on that router? Because if it is, then you don't need port forwarding. Port forwarding is only...

    Problem with port forwarding

Go to http://www.ipchicken.com and note your public IP address. Then go into the GUI of your ISP's modem+router and locate the WAN ip (NOT the LAN ip) that the ISP assigned. Do these match?
