So a friend told me that with 500 usd, I could just keep the Intel Core i7, keep the GFx card and change everything else (case and MoBo included) and add more RAM. Then to save up until I can upgrade the GFX and last the processor. Does this sound good? If so what are my best options for case...

Well depends on whether it is a new rig or reuse components, but I guess if reusing I could go for $500 to $800, preferably around $500.
