Could someone let me know if expanding the partition would be harmful or not, so that I could try that before going with E-50's solution?

Short version: I accidentally shrunk the main partition on my external hard drive to 32gb (from 1 tb), and all of the files are gone. Can I simply expand the partition then run data recovery software to recover it, or will expanding the partition overwrite the data? Long version: I was...
