Question Black Friday or After Holidays: when to buy a new GPU?

I'm wondering if GPU prices will drop after the holiday season, or if the lowest prices for the foreseeable future will more likely be on black Friday. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Question Ryzen 2990WX overclocked to almost 4 Ghz: What GPU to pair with it ?

Well, it is half a decade and a few generations newer, so I'd expect it to be significantly faster. It also uses 40% more power, and runs hotter, so that helps. If I were to upgrade to that cpu I'd need to upgrade everything except the case.

Question Ryzen 2990WX overclocked to almost 4 Ghz: What GPU to pair with it ?

I have a 4k monitor. Ideally I'd like to turn everything up to Ultra, but honestly I don't think my vision is good enough to notice the more subtle changes. I tend to play a lot of FPS type titles. I'm into other genres, but those are the most taxing in my library. I notice in the...

Question Ryzen 2990WX overclocked to almost 4 Ghz: What GPU to pair with it ?

As the title suggests, I run my Ryzen 2990WX at close to 4 GHZ (I need that many cores for other workloads), with DDR4 speeds of 3200mhz. I currently have a 1080 Ti, which is starting to feel a bit old. I was a bit surprised to see benchmarks showing this CPU can even bottleneck a 1080 Ti in...

Question Case fans run at full tilt if there is no motherboard in the case ?

Yes, it's 3x2pin connectors, to send the PWM circuit to the 3 fans, from three motherboard headers. If you could extend the previous image to the left, you would see the backplane with three 4-pin PWM fan connectors. The fans in their orange caddies are slotted into the "backplane assembly"...

Question Case fans run at full tilt if there is no motherboard in the case ?

Thanks for the thorough response. All of my confusion results from a bad assumption on my part: The case I'm working on is very similar but not identical to the Norco RPC-4224., which I also own a couple of. That case does NOT come with a PWM uplink cable, yet the fans don't run at full...

Question Case fans run at full tilt if there is no motherboard in the case ?

I have a 4u case that has hot swap 120mm fans (in caddies) with standard female 4-pin pwm connectors. When slotted into the case, the male PWM connectors that they plug into are powered by a 4-pin molex. I don't know what kind of fan controller is built into this thing, or what else explains...

Question No such thing as DDR3 1866 64 GB LRDIMM modules?

Hey, now that you mention it, the Tested Memory List for my Supermicro X9DRI-LN4F+ only lists 64 GB modules in the 1333 mhz section, so I'm not sure that even 1600 will work, but I'm willing to test, To that end, I think I'll combine all my current 32gb rdimms into one server, and get four 1600...

Question No such thing as DDR3 1866 64 GB LRDIMM modules?

My motherboard supports DDR3 1866 mhz, and it supports 64gb lrdimm modules. I can find 32 gb lrdimm modules at 1866 mhz, or I can find 64 gb modules at 1600 mhz. I can't find 64 gb modules at 1866 mhz, which leads me to beleive they might not exist. My question is: does anyone know if they...

Question Turning an ATX case into a SAS enclosure

Thanks for the reply but, meh, I'd couple the 24 pin connectors between both cases first. The case is 2U and has 12 hotswap bays. The only way to bring that thing out is via the pci slots. Too bad the redundant psus on this case don't have that toggle switch on the back, but I could use a...

Question Turning an ATX case into a SAS enclosure

Theoretically, I suppose. UPDATE: I replaced an 8 bay supermicro 2u hotswap chassis with a 12 bay version of the same, and when I was looking at the backplane I saw only two sff-8087 connectors where I was expecting to see three (cuz they usually connect 4 drives per cable). I located the...

Question Turning an ATX case into a SAS enclosure

I'm new to the world of sas enclosures/expanders, but I'm looking for a way to add a lot more storage to a server, and I wonder if I need to buy a SAS enclosure, or if I can just repurpose these 12 hotswap bay, 2U chassis I have, and basically make my own enclosure. Since I'd like this to...

[SOLVED] Using Socket 2 results in no POST. Does this socket look OK?

I have a Supermicro X8DTL motherboard, which I can't RMA, that won't post when the 2nd CPU slot is in use. I know the problem isn't the RAM, because I tested all the DIMMs on the 1st socket's slots. I know the problem isn't the PSU, because the same PSU works fine on a nearly identical...

Constant problems with RAM disappearing on X58 motherboards

Thanks for the reply. That's not it, though. The RAM is compatible and the bays are populated correctly. As I mentioned, pushing on the HSF will sometimes bring it back.

Constant problems with RAM disappearing on X58 motherboards

When I install RAM on X58 motherboards, if I max them out, the 3rd RAM bay becomes unavailable. The boards can take 24 GB of DDR3, and so I end up with 16. I have thus far always been able to eventually fix the problem by restarting the board enough times, and pushing down on the CPU HSF...
