Question What's the best antivirus software? Microsoft Defender?

Defender is one of the better AVs out there these days. I think ESET is still considered the best, but probably not worth a subscription. I co-sign using things like uBlock when browsing, which will protect against most things before they even get to the PC.

Question Is this computer way too fast for playing pre-Windows XP games?

By about '93 or so games had either ways to manually set their speed or automatically handled faster CPUs. There were some exceptions (the first Wing Commander immediately comes to mind), but by the Win95 era this was mostly a non-concern.

Question Why not for desktops too?

Eh, Arm was really just a replacement for PowerPC. Thing is, as it scales up it's looking more and more like x86-64 CPUs.

Discussion Don't believe all the hype about PCIe 5.0 - - - motherboards are not ready!

Unless I'm horribly mistaken how PCIe works, I'm pretty sure PCIe4 cards running on a PCIe5 slot should run at PCIe5 speeds, so in this cast PCIe5 x8 (equivalent to PCIe4 x16). Even if the card is running at PCIe4 x8, it shouldn't be a bandwidth limitation.

Question Why not for desktops too?

The long and short answer: Software support. The software isn't there for native non-x86-64 systems, and running an emulator costs performance which makes the CPUs less attractive (See: Itanium). Besides, there really isn't a *need* to shift ISAs now that we're already at 64-bit. We had our...

Discussion Don't believe all the hype about PCIe 5.0 - - - motherboards are not ready!

PCIe 5.0 x8 = PCIe 4.0 x16, which isn't even close to a bottleneck yet. Heck, I saw a recent test that showed even PCIe 3.0 x16 isn't that much of a bottleneck, loosing only a handful of FPS.

Question Loss of sound through headset when plugged in to USB ?

I'm betting the update switched the default audio output device; the fact you get audio from 3.5mm when you plug that into the PC indicates that device is probably the primary, and not the USB into the headset.

News Floppy disk-reliant San Francisco train control system spurs concerns of 'catastrophic failure' — and it won't be replaced for at least another decade

As others have said: You can't get rid of the floppies without replacing the *entire* HW ecosystem, which turns into a multi-year project that would easily cost a few hundred million. Or, you can budget a few hundred thousand a year for support. Which one is easier to fit into your yearly...

News Floppy disk-reliant San Francisco train control system spurs concerns of 'catastrophic failure' — and it won't be replaced for at least another decade

Where I work we have a backroom full of spare 286s and floppy disks/drives. Legacy programs are *fun*. It comes down to yearly budgets; even if the long-term cost of upgrading to modern equipment is cheaper, it's cheaper to fit "making the old stuff work" into your yearly budget. As a result...

Question Why is my display dimming when I return to Desktop from Fullscreen App (HDR) ?

I'm assuming HDR is enabled within Windows. In my experience, running applications with the Vulkan renderer cause me all sorts of headaches with HDR. In my case, Vulkan seems to force Exclusive Fullscreen (no idea why), and alt-tabbing out of an application causes the HDR mode to go bonkers...

News Floppy disk-reliant San Francisco train control system spurs concerns of 'catastrophic failure' — and it won't be replaced for at least another decade

Guys...You are aware the floppy drive they use isn't installed on a generic PC, right? It's bespoke HW under the hood; you can't just virtualize it. You have to literally rip ALL the hardware out.

Question HDR turns itself off immediately after being toggled on (Windows 10) ?

Oh doy, was thinking in NVIDIA terms. Pretty sure you can adjust the Chroma in AMDs utility as well, though I don't know offhand (long-time NVIDIA user). But regardless, the AVR is the limitation.

Question HDR turns itself off immediately after being toggled on (Windows 10) ?

There's your problem. The AVR only supports HDMI 2.0, and you are running into bandwidth limitations. Yes, HDMI 2.0 *can* do 4k60 HDR...at 4:2:0 chroma: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Refresh_frequency_limits_for_HDR10_video So you change your resolution to 4k at 4:4:4/RGB, and the...

Question Ryzen 5 5600 Temp high up to 95c

Ryzen can run hot if your cooling isn't adequate. Per AMD, 95C is *normal*. Note some motherboards have a UEFI Performance Boost Override setting that can lower the thermal limit of the CPU down to a lower point (usually 85C and 75C); last I saw using a lower threshold didn't affect...

Question PC makes the room hot ?

All a Metal case is going to do is potentially absorb some of the heat into the case itself. That doesn't change the simple issue here: The PC is generating heat, and that head needs to go *somewhere*. And the FX line wasn't exactly known for running cool.
