I was planning on just buying a 1080p screen to replace the 1600x900 screen if I didn't like it. Anyone else have advice? If the OS is all that is missing, I will pull the trigger. I get free OS from my university.

You need to be more specific. What type of games/use will you be using it for. I will say that for only $500, you will not get a beastly laptop. If you will elaborate on the usage, I am sure someone here will point you in the right direction.

Almost certain that you cannot upgrade a GPU in a laptop, at all. So you might look at getting a new laptop.

I am no expert, but I can say you should look at Asus, MSI, and maybe a custom laptop for that price. Go to Newegg, or a similar site for the UK, and look at their systems. Some of them can be good deals. You should be able to get a really decent higher-end laptop for £1000.
