The PSU suggestion sounds reasonable. So I guess that if it turns out to not be the PSU, it's pretty much guaranteed to be the motherboard? Also if it helps my PC was only switched on for a combined time of maybe 3 hours so far.

I tested the PSU with a paperclip. Worked. Taking everything out of the case, installing only the CPU and fan plus the two power connectors, then shorting the pins does not work. Is there some way I can 100% guarantee that the motherboard died before I return it? I don't want to be out of pocket.

Finally got my final component this morning, I installed and and switched my PC on. It lived! I was so happy. I installed Windows, tried to connect to the internet to update drivers etc. Couldn't do it. I figured it could be the LAN driver, so I tried installing that from the disc provided...

Trouble with the haswell refresh CPUs is the mobos under £50-60 might need a BIOS update before installing the CPU, and that's really not something I'd like to be doing. I had picked the i5 4460 but decided to go for the 4440 for that very reason. :( I like the look of that GPU though.

Finally got something I think I'm happy with, but a few questions left unanswered! Is everything fully compatible? Am I good to put Linux on this thing? Is 450w enough? Is there anything that could be improved (or cost cut)? Here's my planned build.
