Could I use a 20 pin IDE cable and connect it to a 40 HDD?

So after hours of research with a very long playlist I found IDE DOM's however they're all 44 or 40 pin, when the drive manager has 20 pins for drives and 34 pins for Floppy and something called "winchester". Would it be possible to only use half the pins or an adapter of sort? Really need a...
