Question LAN Cable passes test but won't work

I'm happy to update to say that I finally found a plug that works perfectly on the end of the Excel cable. I got this, from ComputerStar/Fairline, MPN 9200-750 ... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392445428875 Not cheap, this is per plug. I had a good look at the terminals with a magnifier before...

    [SOLVED] Ethernet cable 5e / 6 or 6e?

OK, you're right. But most real world use if via TCP/IP so has error detection and retries in the event of a working but dodgy connection. My point is that a crap cable can lead to slow data, much slower than the speed of light!

    [SOLVED] Ethernet cable 5e / 6 or 6e?

Ping will be increased if, due to a dodgy cable, the transmitting end has to re-transmit due to the receiving end detecting uncorrectable errors. Even in a digital world, cables can affect real-world performance. It's possible to have something working, but not very well. Internet protocols...

    [SOLVED] Double router setup

5G may be a good idea if it's a congested neighbourhood. Round here, all my neighbours on 2.4GHz use 20MHz channels, and thankfully all stick to 1, 6 or 11 so it all works pretty well. Obviously it depends on the router, but I've found Auto mode to be much worse than doing nothing in the past...

    [SOLVED] Double router setup

You've got so much going on at once that it's going to be hard to work out what is causing what. Even if two things happen at the same time, one may not be the cause of the other - i.e. correlation does not prove causation. So it would be very easy to think that something may be causing...

    [SOLVED] Double router setup

It's impossible to know what's going on if you have others on the same connection doing things that are beyond your control. I would expect pings to increase due to workload on your router, even if you are well under the maximum speed. Still worth checking for clashing channels though, just in...

    [SOLVED] Double router setup

I find it difficult to understand how wifi could slow down your ethernet, unless someone else is using it for massive amounts of data. Is anyone else using your wifi when this happens? You might also want to try Wifi Analyzer or similar on your phone or a PC, to check for channel clashes. I...

[SOLVED] Do I Need A Second Router?

Now you've lost me. I'm talking about keeping the ISP's modem, and plugging a router into it. Exactly like everyone used to do before combined modem/routers were invented. The router would apply NAT to everything connected to it. I don't understand why you mention vlans.

[SOLVED] Do I Need A Second Router?

Not if the ISP's modem is able to operate in modem-only mode. Some can, some can't.

[SOLVED] Do I Need A Second Router?

I wouldn't worry. Using the ISP's own router is very normal. If you really wanted to go down the route of buying your own, then one option may be to replace the ISP's own modem/router entirely, depending on what connection method you use and what your ISP's policies are. Alternatively, it may...

[SOLVED] Do I Need A Second Router?

It sounds unusual in that the providers of the security system are providing the router. I'd be inclined to use another router that you own and they don't have access to, and connect their system to it. If the use of their own router really is a requirement for their system then you could plug...

[SOLVED] Use a phone to provide an internet connection to a router?

Is there a reason why the computer(s) can't connect via wifi? It may be simpler to add wifi to the computer than to try and bridge wired-wireless. Obviously this will work, as it's exactly what your phone's hotspot is intended for, anything else is at risk of hitting an obstacle. I use a...

[SOLVED] Anyone Know how to Use a Phone as Your Home Internet Source?

From the mad ideas department, an option for using your mobile could be a wifi extender, that way you could put your phone where it gets the best mobile signal and the extender reasonably close to your computer etc. You'd have two wifi networks, one for your LAN and another exclusively for the...

[SOLVED] Manually mapping a drobo as a network drive

I've just tried it with my NAS (actually mine's a USB drive plugged into the router), I normally access it via \\IPaddr\Drive. I'd never tried just putting the IP in alone, I've just tried it in Windows Explorer and can confirm it does work, you just need the \\ in front of it, it then shows...

[SOLVED] Anyone Know how to Use a Phone as Your Home Internet Source?

80 Euro per month? Crikey, is that what it costs where you are? Have you checked other providers, or even what price your current one offers new customers? It depends on how much usage you'd need on your mobile if you had a separate unlimited account at home. If you'd need 2x unlimited then...
