Update on this, I switched from IRS to AHCI and now both drives will work when the PC is shut down and powered on manually. However after a restart the 980 Pro in M.2_1 will not show up, but then after a shut down and power on it's fine. Really odd but at this point its good enough for me lol.

got to the intel optane memory tab and it says "there are no valid disk pairs in your system" no disable button.

I just tried and after the reboot I got a Windows error screen saying incompatible boot drive, went back to bios and switched optane back on and was able to boot from my 970. I assume I'll have to format my drive?

No software or anything just mentioning it, I didn't know that IRST isn't necessary when I built the PC but I see that now :)

booting with my old 970 in slot 1 and with slot 2 empty took me straight to bios, drive not seen, i reinstalled both drives to there original spots. booted back to bios and only recognized the 970 in slot 2 as usual. I turned off optane and rebooted and it said inaccessible boot drive so...

I'll give it a shot, also just saw your message about the intel optane, I'll try disabling that, I've seen a lot of people saying that it can cause problems with m2 ssd's.

It's a possibility, I read that the 980 Pro is backwards compatible with PCIe 3.0 so it should work just like a 3.0 M.2 drive. I've tried changing the M.2 settings in my mobo from auto to gen 3 but that didn't do anything, I didn't think it would cause like you said my mobo does not support 4.0...

Hi, just to be clear I'm using an i7-9700k at 3.60ghz, and yes you are correct. I read that the 980 pro was compatible with PCIE 3.0, I know it won't get the same read/writes but I thought it was a good investment towards a future build. still trying to find the issue :)

Sorry I didn't see that, I'm running Windows 10, Version 21H1 (OS Build 19043. 1586) I'll do some more digging, thank you for the help :)

I am using Samsung Magician, it tells me my 970 is using intel drivers. It's recommendation is to "Use Microsoft or Samsung NVMe driver" when I try installing the NVMe driver it says "Samsung NVMe Device is not connected"
