CPU Choice: Xeon E3 or Core i7?

Yeah, I'd pay a few more bucks for an H97 board over an H81 one if building from the beginning, mostly to get 4 DIMMS for your RAM and front panel USB 3.0. When games start needing more than 8GB I'm going to need to throw my 4GB sticks away and buy 8GB ones so I can get to 16GB. Of course I...

CPU Choice: Xeon E3 or Core i7?

If you live near a Microcenter you can actually get the i7-4790k for $280 plus tax though. And the 4790k is by far the best CPU on LGA 1150.

CPU Choice: Xeon E3 or Core i7?

Between the Xeons I'd highly recommend the E3-1231v3 over the E3-1246v3. Mainly because all the 1246v3 offers is 100MHz higher clock and an integrated GPU, but the iGPU is meaningless and the 100MHz bump amounts to about a 2.8% increase in clockspeed. However you can get the 1231v3 shipped for...

CPU Choice: Xeon E3 or Core i7?

If you are willing to pay for the 4790k then that's the one to get. If you want to save some money the Xeon E3-1231v3 is awesome too, but even at stock the 4790k will be 600MHz faster on workloads using all four cores. And don't listen to people who tell you games don't use more than four...

Would AMD be better if games supported 8 cores?

Games do support 8 cores now, and no, AMD is not better than even the non-hyperthreaded Core i5's, much the Core i7's and Xeon E3's that have HT. http://gamegpu.ru/test-video-cards/igry-2014-goda-protiv-protsessorov-test-gpu.html

System Builder Marathon Q1 2015: Our Mainstream Enthusiast PC

The optical drive is a waste that could have gone into a quality PSU and a better motherboard. I do agree with the i7. It's 2015 and new games make use of 8+ threads for the most part. It's not 2013 when an i7 really was a waste of money over an i5 when everything was written for four threads or...
