Just to add on previously, you should be installing antivirus/malwarebytes in safe mode and scanning in safe mode. Have you run chkdsk in cmd prompt to see if its a hard drive issue? When you say that it crashes, do you get a blue screen?

5 hour battery life is alright but IM spoiled by the 8 hour battery life on chromebooks.

Its happening. Soon flash drives will be replaced with NAND and a 16, 32gb, 64gb stick will be cheap. 500gb/1TB ssds will be under $100. I'll give it 5 years or maybe I'm just dreaming? :)
