Thanks for the help guys! I had a similar problem and was convinced my HD had bust (Got a blue screen error)! But after successfully starting in safe mode, realised it couldn't be. I reset BIOS defaults, which didn't work but disabling services etc in MSCONFIG has worked. Just working my way...
