Thank you all, I may have resolved the issue. I have disabled all enhancements under the speaker properties in control panel, Hardware & Sound, manage audio devices.

I have my PC plugged into my amplifier, cable is of good quality, I'm running iTunes but the system intermittently generating a cracking or popping sound when I start A new track and it is also occurring at start up and other random occasions. I fear for my very rare and irreplaceable Rogers...
