News WD Sets the Record Straight: Lists All Drives That Use Slower SMR Tech

Really must wonder about WD for any server use anymore. We've had trouble with externals for a long time after too many shadow copies, but WD doesn't claim they're compatible for Windows Server OS's anyway. We've had "Archive" drives that would take themselves offline repeatedly apparently for...

Paradox Interactive Nabs ‘World of Darkness’ IP In White Wolf Acquisition

Once this would've sounded great, but Paradox has pushed several projects out in recent years that should've either been completed or scrapped. Instead, they've been sold as complete but abandoned in broken condition as the developers were either closed down or moved on to other projects. Their...

Android Stagefright Exploit Released To The Public

Does anyone with a prepaid or off-contract plan ever get updates? I don't think I've seen an OTA update since I dropped my old post-paid service and I've had three carriers since.

FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai Opposes Open Internet, Claims U.S. Internet Model Superior To Europe's

Google came to town and much of the Portland/SW Washington region saw Comcast speeds double overnight, even on the lower tiers. The infrastructure wasn't upgraded overnight, they just needed a reason to provide the higher speeds.

T-Mobile CEO Angry With People Who 'Steal' From Carrier's 'Unlimited' Data Plans

Considered T-Mobile, but went with Cricket. Cricket doesn't advertise unlimited data, but a set number, after which it drops to 2G speeds. I haven't even used the 5gb I pay for in any month yet. That's stated up front though, not hidden behind a false "unlimited" claim. Seems he's playing...

    AT&T Shakes Up Data Plans

Cricket is still $45/month with autopay, unlimited talk/text in US/Canada/Mexico (including roaming in Mexico), 5GB/month and no "overages" as it just drops to 2G speeds. It uses the same AT&T towers, but doesn't qualify for microcell connections if you need those.

    Computers Can Now Replicate Handwriting

The banks will jump on this, it'll make their "robosigning" (aka forgery for anyone else) much more believable.

U.S. Treasury Hacking Vulnerability Shows Need For Overhaul Of U.S. Government's Security Model

Seems the director of the FBI is against people securing any of their data, so why should this be addressed?

Chrysler Issues Security Update To Prevent Remote Control Of Vehicles

Anything that can be accessed remotely can be hacked. Someday the old men of government will learn this, maybe after they're replaced.

AT&T/DirecTV Merger Approved By FCC, Agency Forces Fiber Expansion And More

It was government regulators that halted FIOS expansion, wasn't it? Wait, no, it was shareholders revolting because Verizon was investing in expansion too far ahead of competitors, so they thought it unnecessary. Local regulatory boards do enable corporations to ignore improvements, with an...

    Starting as Repair Pc's technician

Buy? My first bench was made up of salvaged parts. An ATX power supply, cardboard box part with antistatic bag, an old monitor, and whatever keyboard, mouse, and cards I came across. Bins and zip ties will keep the bench area from becoming a scattered mess while keeping cords and cables...

Two Lawsuits Filed Against Lenovo Over Superfish Scandal

Lenovo should re-establish trust and join with the NSA to offer privacy-protecting encryption as solid as Admiral Mike Rogers thinks it should be. What could possibly go wrong?

Call Privacy Virtually Non-Existent Because Of Poor SS7 Security

It takes fake cell towers? Weren't those in the news recently as one of the ways the US government has been monitoring the people it supposedly serves?

Comcast Faces Lawsuit Over Home Wi-Fi Routers

I guess it might matter in San Francisco. I saw the public network show up, but the router's range ends before my driveway, so anyone using it would have to be sitting on my porch.
