are you sure you're not plugged in to your motherboard video connector? this sounds like you're using onboard video and not your videocard.

wait...I just re-read the original post...you don't have any thermal paste under the CPU cooler? that would do it...apply thermal paste and set you cooler up normal and see if that works

do you have access to a friend's PC to check parts on? I've had the issue you are describing twice...once it was the CPU cooler not being plugged in and therefore the fan not spinning up and cooling the CPU...it would thermal shut down the system after about 2 or 3 seconds because the CPU was...

also, check to make sure your CPU power is plugged in...the 4-pin plug at the top of your motherboard

check your power on connector and pins. other than that I would start looking at the motherboard. did you buy all the parts new?
